Arthur Conan Doyle Lecture Series

The first event on the 24th May was a lecture by Michael Gunton, Senior Archivist of Portsmouth's Arthur Conan Doyle Bequest entitled: 'Conan Doyle - the Hampshire/Surrey connection'.

The 50+ guests on the evening had a whistlestop tour of the life of the great man himself with the help of archive materials from the Richard Llywelln collection. It was an insight to a great man not just for his literary talents but as a sportsman, traveller, fighter for social justice and so much more.

Other lectures in the series will include:

  • Heritage Open Day - Sunday 10th September
  • Bonnie MacBird - Hollywood screenwriter - Sunday 10th September
  • Mark Goodchild - architect of the Undershaw restoration
  • Dr Marion Dell, local historian,"We could not have hit upon anything more perfect" - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his family and friends at Undershaw" on the 4th of October.
  • Luke Kuhns, author of Welcome to Undershaw: A Brief History of Arthur Conan Doyle: the man that created Sherlock Holmes. November (Date TBC)
  • Creative Writing Workshop - January 2018 (Date TBC)
  • Arunabha Sengupta, novelist & cricket historian - Conan Doyle's Cricket Adventures (Date TBC)

The year will culminate in the week of the 22nd May 2018 with events proposed to include: a detective story writing competition for schools, an art competition and a themed weekend with further lectures, tours of Undershaw, music by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, local walks, a murder mystery dinner and other Conan Doyle themed events.

In a highly competitive situation, Imagine Kids+Family has landed the filmed content rights to Ali Standish's upcoming multi-book series The Improbable Tales of Baskerville Hall, which tracks the imagined origins story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional characters, for development as a TV series that builds an integrated Arthur Conan Doyle universe spanning all his works.
