Doyle was not yet 21 years old when he signed on as ship's surgeon to the SS Hope, a whaler, even before finishing his medical studies. His zeal for adventure and exploration led him to undertake this somewhat dangerous journey. At its end, he returned to England as a mature man and a practised writer, for he kept his experiences of the voyage on the SS Hope in a personal, illustrated diary. This would become the basis for his book Dangerous Work: Diary of an Arctic Adventure. In this work, he described the thrill of pushing into the northern reaches of the Arctic Ocean to hunt whales and seals. Among other excitements, he fell numerous times into icy seas during the journey. His account of the Arctic beauty around the ship was equally compelling. He wrote of towering white icebergs and an endless expanse of ocean, ice and snow.

The Montblanc Writers Edition Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Limited Edition 8 is inspired by Doyle's experiences during his six-month whaling tour in the Arctic Ocean. The cap and barrel are decorated with 3D icebergs made of Au 750 solid white gold, which seem to swim in Arctic waters created from translucent blue lacquer. Crowning the cap top is a cluster of pavé-set diamonds forming the Montblanc emblem and surrounded by Au 750 solid white gold. The words Doyle entered into his diary on his 21st birthday, which he celebrated at sea, are immortalised on the cap ring: 'I CAME OF AGE AT 80o NORTH LATITUDE'.

Made from Au 750/1000 Solid White Gold, this fountain pen is skeletonized with an overlay on several translucent, hand-painted lacquer fields which draws inspiration from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's house Undershaw as well as an old street map of London. The clip comes in the shape of a magnifying glass and boasts the "ACD" logo. Hidden behind the logo lies a movable magnifying glass. As a reference to Doyle's interest for spiritualism, the engraved cap ring top can be removed inspired by a sideric pendulum.

This notion is again evoked through the engraving on the cone about a book that Doyle wrote about Spiritualism. The Au 750/1000 solid gold nib with ruthenium and rhodium coating features the face of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as well as a ship's mast from his adventure novel "The Captain of the Pole Star".

The clip is inspired by the magnifying glass used by Sherlock Holmes. Behind the clip is the silhouette of a hound made from photoluminescent pigments in reference to the Holmes story "The Hound of the Baskervilles". The cap ring features the signature of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as well as the logo of "A Study in Scarlet" - Holmes' first case.

The Montblanc Emblem in precious Mother-of-Pearl crowns the cap of the edition. The handcrafted Au 750/1000 solid gold nib is engraved with a portrait of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and magnifying glass in reference to Sherlock Holmes.
