On This Day In History....

A Study in Scarlet is the first Sherlock Holmes novel.

Written by Arthur Conan Doyle and first published on the first of December in the Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887.

Who could have ever predicted what would happen next! A slow start! 

But then...

In 1891 and ’92 the first Sherlock Holmes short stories appeared in the then-new Strand Magazine and became an enormous transatlantic sensation.

This soon made him one of the best-known and highest-paid writers in the world.

In the end, over a forty-year period, he wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.
